Trip Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive to Umbwe Gate (1,600 m). Ascend immediately through dense rainforest on a steep ridge. Camp at Cave Camp (2,940 m) — a natural cave used as shelter.
Continue the steep ascent through upper forest and heath. The gradient relents as you reach Barranco Camp (3,976 m) on the Southern Circuit. Dramatic views of the southern glaciers.
Rest day with an acclimatisation walk to Lava Tower (4,630 m) and back to Barranco. The only dedicated acclimatisation day on this compressed itinerary — make the most of it.
Climb the Barranco Wall and traverse the Southern Circuit past Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp (4,673 m). Rest and prepare summit gear.
Midnight start. Push to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) via Stella Point. Descend to Mweka Camp (3,068 m).
Descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate (1,640 m). Certificate. Transfer to Moshi.

About This Package
The Umbwe Route is the most challenging path on Kilimanjaro — a relentlessly steep and direct assault on the southern face through dense forest and exposed ridges. It sees very few trekkers, making it an extraordinarily remote and atmospheric experience. Due to its steep gradient and compressed acclimatisation profile, it carries the highest altitude sickness risk of any Kilimanjaro route and is strictly recommended for experienced mountaineers in excellent physical condition who have trekked at altitude before. The reward is an incredibly dramatic and personal journey up Africa's highest peak. Not for the faint-hearted — but for the right person, it is unforgettable.
