Trip Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive up to the Shira Plateau (3,500 m) in 4WD vehicles. Begin acclimatising immediately. Hike to Simba Cave Camp (3,650 m) across open moorland with superb views of Kibo.
Morning acclimatisation walk toward Shira Cathedral (3,962 m) before returning to camp and hiking to Shira Huts (3,840 m). Afternoon rest.
Head east across the plateau, passing beneath the impressive Shira Ridge. Camp at Fischer Camp (4,050 m) — more exposed but with magnificent views of the summit cone.
Classic acclimatisation day: ascend to Lava Tower (4,630 m) for lunch, then descend to Barranco Camp (3,976 m). This altitude exposure is a game-changer for your summit success.
Scale the famous Barranco Wall — an exciting hands-and-feet scramble. Continue across the Southern Circuit to Karanga Camp (4,035 m). Unbeatable views of the southern glaciers.
Short steep climb to Barafu Camp (4,673 m). Rest, hydrate, eat well. Sleep by 19:00 for the midnight start.

About This Package
The Shira Route begins with a 4WD vehicle transfer to the Shira Plateau at 3,500 m — the highest starting elevation of any Kilimanjaro route. This dramatic opening immediately places you in high-altitude moorland, far above the rainforest, surrounded by the vast ancient caldera of the Shira Plateau. The 8-day itinerary takes the southern approach to the summit, joining the Machame and Lemosho routes at Lava Tower for the classic "climb high, sleep low" acclimatisation day. The extended route across the Shira Plateau provides exceptional preparation for the summit push. An ideal choice for those who want a premium, uncrowded experience with outstanding moorland scenery.
