Trip Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive to Rongai Gate (1,950 m) near the Kenyan border. Begin trekking north through farmland and pine forest to Simba Camp (2,625 m) with first views of Kibo.
Pass through open moorland with diminishing vegetation. Walk past the Second Cave and on to Third Cave Camp (3,895 m). Beautiful views north toward Kenya.
Short morning trek to Kikelewa Camp (3,630 m). Afternoon acclimatisation walk to higher ground. Extra day built into the 7-day itinerary for improved summit success.
Dramatic climb to Mawenzi Tarn Camp (4,330 m) — a beautiful glacial lake beneath the jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak. Afternoon acclimatisation walk to the saddle.
Cross the desolate alpine desert of The Saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. Arrive at Kibo Huts (4,703 m) — the highest huts on the mountain. Rest and prepare for summit night.
Start at midnight. Ascend the scree slopes via Hans Meyer Cave to Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim, then on to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Descend via the Marangu route to Horombo Huts (3,720 m).
Final descent through heath and rainforest to Marangu Gate (1,879 m). Certificate ceremony. Transfer back to Moshi.

About This Package
The Rongai Route is the only path approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, starting near the Kenyan border at Rongai. It is considerably drier than the southern routes — an important advantage during the rainy season — and sees far fewer trekkers, giving you a more remote and peaceful experience. The gradual ascent profile makes it one of the more manageable routes, while the northern views of the summit and glimpses into Kenya create a completely different perspective on the mountain. Descent is via the Marangu route, passing the picturesque Horombo Huts and glacial tarns.
