Kilimanjaro Marangu Route — 6 Days
Overview
The original Kilimanjaro route — the "Coca-Cola Route". The only route with hut accommodation instead of camping. Gentler gradients and comfortable sleeping huts make this the most accessible route for beginners.
Trip Highlights
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Drive to Marangu Gate (1,879 m). Register and begin trekking through lush rainforest. Spot colobus monkeys and visit Maundi Crater (optional detour). Arrive at Mandara Huts (2,720 m).
Exit the forest into open heath and moorland. Stunning views of both Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. Arrive at Horombo Huts (3,720 m) — the most pleasant camp on the route.
Full rest and acclimatisation day. Take a guided walk toward Mawenzi Peak (4,000–4,200 m) and return to Horombo for the night. This extra day is the key reason our 6-day itinerary outperforms the standard 5-day package.
Cross the alpine desert of The Saddle. Vegetation disappears and the volcanic landscape becomes stark and dramatic. Arrive at Kibo Huts (4,703 m). Rest and eat early dinner. Sleep by 19:00.
Midnight start up steep scree and rock. Pass Hans Meyer Cave (5,150 m) and reach Gilman's Point (5,681 m) on the crater rim at sunrise. Continue the crater rim walk to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Descend all the way to Horombo Huts for celebration dinner.
Leisurely descent through moorland and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. Summit certificate ceremony. Transfer to Moshi.

About This Package
The Marangu Route is the oldest established path up Kilimanjaro and the only route that offers dormitory-style hut accommodation throughout the trek — no camping required. Often called the "Coca-Cola Route" because of its relative accessibility, it follows a straightforward ridge through the mountain's eastern side. The 6-day itinerary includes an extra acclimatisation day at Horombo Huts (3,720 m), significantly improving summit success compared to the standard 5-day trip. The same trail is used for ascent and descent, so you'll know the terrain well for the summit push. This route is an excellent choice for first-time high-altitude trekkers.
